Learn design. One card at a time.
Skip the three-hour video courses. Master type, contrast, layout and design systems through short illustrated cards you can get through on a commute — built for how you already read your phone.
Contrast has to be obvious
A 10% jump looks like a mistake. A 60% jump looks like a decision.
⚡️ 4,281 learners building design judgement daily. No jargon, no filler — just the reasoning behind good work.
Card-by-card learning. One idea at a time.
Design is judgement, not trivia. Each card makes one claim, shows it, and gives you the example — so the reasoning sticks instead of the vocabulary.
01 / Design Foundations
The rules, principles and concepts used to create work that is useful, understandable and worth trusting.
02 / UX Research
How to talk to users, separate evidence from opinion, and turn messy conversations into decisions you can defend.
03 / Interaction Design
Flows, states, feedback and motion — the craft of making a product feel like it is answering you.
Spaced repetition built for judgement, not memorisation.
SHFTPLAY brings a card back just before you would have forgotten it. You are not memorising definitions — you are rehearsing the decision until it becomes instinct.

Flash drills: spot the hierarchy
Swipe-action cards comparing two layouts under a strict five-second limit.
- 3d
Active recall: rebuild the type scale
Blank-slate prompts where you reconstruct the ramp from memory.

The contrast trap
Identify the accessibility failure in a real interface, fast.
The scheduler brings a card back at the point of maximum forgetting, which returns your retention to full and stretches the gap before the next review.
Real briefs are messy. Get ready for them.
Reading a principle is not knowing it. Every chapter ends in questions drawn from the situations the principle actually shows up in.

Spot the hierarchy
Given a dense screen, name the first three things the eye lands on and say why that order is right or wrong.
TESTS: VISUAL WEIGHTTIME: UNDER 60 SECONDS - PRACTITIONER TIER
Fix the form
A signup form with eight fields and no grouping. Restructure it so the labels, inputs and errors read as one system.

Name the token
Choose colour token names for an accent that will survive a rebrand, and defend each one against the obvious alternative.
TESTS: SYSTEM THINKINGTIME: UNDER 5 MINUTES
Cards, practice tasks, and immediate analysis.
A glance inside the app. Careful typography, hard edges, and nothing on screen that is not doing work.

Contrast & Hierarchy
- 1What contrast is actually for
- 2Type scale without guessing
- 3Spacing as grouping
Two greys sit 5% apart on a label and its value. What is the fix?
Think about what contrast is actually for.
Correct!
Contrast has to be unambiguous. A 5% difference reads as a rendering bug; pushing to roughly 40% makes it read as a label and a value — a deliberate pair.
Three steps to design judgement.

Pick your course
Start with Design. Law, Finance, Computer Science and AI are being written now — one course active at a time, and switching keeps your progress on each.
- 02
Read a few cards a day
Each card is one idea with a worked example. Bookmark the ones that land, and the app remembers where you stopped.
- 03
Build the daily habit
A reminder at a time you choose, a streak that counts, and review prompts that arrive right before you would have forgotten.
Keep the fire alive. Track your daily progression.
Consistency out-performs intensity. Streaks, weekly benchmarks and saved chapters are there because five minutes a day for a month beats one long Saturday you never repeat.
Late night reading. Late night learning.
A low-contrast interface built to keep your eyes fresh when the room is dark and the phone is the only light in it.
